The Third Georgia Infantry was organized in late April, 1861. In the spring of 1862, the Third Georgia Infantry returned to Virginia and joined the Army of Northern Virginia. It served in that way for the remainder of the war. The Third Georgia participated in more than fifty engagements during its career. Among them:

   April 19, 1862
   May 31 - June 1, 1862
   July 1, 1862
   August 16 - September 2, 1862
   September 16 - 17, 1862
   December 12 - 15, 1862
   April 27 - May 6, 1863
   June 3 - August 1, 1863
   May 4 - June 12, 1864
   May 8 - 21, 1864
   June 1 - 12, 1864
   March 28 - April 9, 1865
   April 9, 1865

An examination of the paroles granted at Appomattox Court House shows that the Third Georgia Infantry surrendered more than two hundred thirty-five officers and enlisted men. The Third Georgia was one of the largest units to lay down arms at Appomattox Court House.
