3rd Georgia
Volunteer Infantry

The photo was taken near Richmond during the winter of 1861-1862. The Third Georgia Infantry was organized in late April, 1861. In the spring of 1862, the Third Georgia Infantry returned to Virginia and joined the Army of Northern Virginia. It served in that way for the remainder of the war. The Third Georgia participated in more than fifty engagements during its career. Among them:

An examination of the paroles granted at Appomattox Court House shows that the Third Georgia Infantry surrendered more than two hundred thirty-five officers and enlisted men. The Third Georgia was one of the largest units to lay down arms at Appomattox Court House.

	THE OTHER "3rd GEORGIA VOLUNTEERS" From Marion County and organized in mid 1864, this home guard unit was separate from the 3rd Georgia Vol. Inf. regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia described here. They were mostly very old or very young, and fought in the Battle of Coosawhatchie River in South Carolina in December 1864.
